Acupuncture Back Pain Relief Research

Acupuncture for back pain relief is proving to be an effective treatment for different types of back pain. There are times when other treatments such as chiropractic or osteopathy are not working or the treatment does not last. Often I have found from experience that the reason is that the underlying ‘qi’ is blocked. Acupuncture is very effective in correcting this and the back condition then improves often without any other intervention.

Acupuncture For Back Pain Relief is Effective

According to a report conducted by medical researchers, acupuncture for low back pain works and can be cost effective. The cost of acupuncture is considered well below the threshold used by officials in order to decide whether or not the NHS is able to afford to fund such a set treatment.

However, two studies on BMJ.com suggest that a short course of acupuncture would really benefit patients and healthcare providers. It is said that up to 80 per cent of people in the UK will experience back pain at some point in their lives, which costs the NHS a staggering 480 million a year. The annual economic cost of low back pain in disability, sickness benefits and lost productivity is estimated to be more than 10 billion.

The evidence of acupuncture’s benefits is still inconclusive; however, around 2 per cent of the UK population uses it in any one year. back pain acupunctureDr Hugh MacPherson from the University of York and colleagues and Sheffield University said they reached their conclusions by studying 241 adults that all had low back pain. All the patients remained under GP care but all were randomly assigned to up to 10 acupuncture treatment sessions or the usual NHS care.

The study was undertaken for a period of two years and it was discovered that the average cost of back pain treatment, including acupuncture, was 460, compared to 345 for usual care.

The investigators came to the conclusion that the health benefits gained from acupuncture in terms of quality and quantity of life were more worthwhile, regardless of it being more expensive. All patients who received acupuncture in the study claimed they felt lower pain levels and in result used fewer painkillers to those who received usual NHS care. The difference in pain scores between the groups was only small according to the study authors. Nevertheless they said it represented a “clinically worthwhile benefit” and can be viewed as a “moderate” effect.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Health said that it was up to the local NHS service providers to decide when to provide acupuncture. Chief executive of the British Acupuncture Council, Mike O’Farrell, said: “Our hope is that after regulation, the decision makers will have increased awareness and confidence to offer acupuncture more widely.”

Mike Cummings, medical director of the British Medical Acupuncture Society, cautioned that not everyone with back pain would benefit from acupuncture though. Acupuncture And Five Elements Theory

As human beings we have a very close association with nature and the five elements and the seasons. Thousands of years ago the Five Elements Theory was evolved by the ancient Chinese who had a close affinity with nature. Below you will see a chart showing some of these connections which greatly assist in diagnosing the root qi imbalance that a patient has.

The principal keys to determining the imbalance is in accurately observing the colour, sound and predominant emotion and subtle odour of the patient. In a very simplistic way if the acupuncturist observes a green hue to the face, shouting in the voice, anger in the predominant emotion and a rancid odour, they have an imbalance in their relationship with the Wood Element which may give rise to liver or gall bladder problems. In reality these associations can be very subtle and take experience to pick up accurately.

Five-element Acupuncture Treats The Body, Mind And Spirit

While contemporary acupuncture typically focuses on symptoms, classical five-element acupuncture not only looks beyond symptoms to root causes, but treats the body, mind and spirit in harmony with the laws of nature. Ancient Chinese philosophers identified five laws or elements of nature: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. These five elements, present within and around us, must be in balance and flow harmoniously from one to the other in body mind and spirit for optimal health and well-being.

what are the five elements of life

Copyright 2006 Helen Wall

Five-element acupuncture identifies acupuncture points associated with these five elements of nature. Within everybody, one element will go out of balance under stress and affect all the other elements.

Because most diseases start on the spirit level and eventually manifest in physical symptoms, the five-element practitioner treats not only the body, but also the mind and spirit. The practitioner focuses on acupuncture points associated with a specific element while providing the spirit with support, thereby treating the whole person.

Five-element acupuncture names points associated with each element. For example, a patient presented with headaches but underlying his symptom was indecisiveness and frustration about not manifesting his dreams. Wood points like ‘Gate of Hope’ and ‘Yang Mound Spring’ helped the patient regain hope and clarity and his headaches disappeared.

Wood is associated with spring and exuberant growth. It goes with the liver and gall bladder and addresses anger, decision-making, logic, vision and hope. Another patient was feeling isolated and disconnected, unable to give and receive love.

The Fire points ‘Inner Frontier Gate’ and ‘Outer Frontier Gate’ helped her feel and share the warmth within. Fire goes with summer when nature reaches its full expression. Summer also goes with the warmth and joy we experience when connected to life and others. Physically, fire goes with the heart and small intestine and is associated with sexual hormones and regulating body temperature.

A patient complained of constant hunger, stress and lack of support her marriage. Earth points such as ‘Abundant Splendor’ helped her experience the richness of earth within her spirit, and ‘Great Enveloping’ was like a big hug, helping her reconnect with her own internal support. Earth is associated with late summer and the bounty of harvest. A healthy earth element enhances the ability to nourish one’s self and others and to feel at home anywhere. Physically the earth element goes with the stomach and spleen. Mentally, it helps digest information. When this element is nourished, we feel relaxed, grounded, stable, and secure.

A constipated patient could not let go on any level and benefited from ‘Great Eliminator.’ She also could not recognize her own value and needed ‘Heavenly Palace’, in order see the richness within herself. Metal is represented by autumn when the trees lose their leaves. Like trees, one needs to let go of past beliefs, plans, and attachments. Physically metal goes with the lungs, large Intestines and the skin. Metal represents what is valuable and precious, like the divine essence within and around us. Metal restores the ability to see beauty within and without.

Five-element acupuncture also identifies many additional points that can be used locally for pain and specific illnesses. But by treating the whole person, the positive qualities of all five elements will interact. Regular treatments of five-element acupuncture typically result in physical health, mental clarity and feelings of well-being, providing the balance needed for increased health and happiness.

What Does Acupuncture Involve?

What does acupuncture involve? Ths actually one of the most asked questions today.  There are many ways to describe this method of healing but it is important to know that when you ask what is acupuncture, you may find various answers to your question.  The reason for this is simple.  There are many forms of acupuncture, all of which can be effective to different levels.  As you work with a professional acupuncturist, you will want to consider what methods they use and how they can help you.

It is an ancient form of Chinese medicine that has been used for over 3000 years, some even believe longer.  In this method of healing, it does not work and is not based on any area of western medicine.  Rather, it is based on restoring the flow of qi through the body.  Qi is the energy force or the life force in the body.  When qi is unable to flow smoothly as it should, you feel pain or become ill.  Acupuncture works to allow the flow to be restored so that the pain subsides and improves greatly. If the qi is blocked or impeded it can also effect our emotional as well as mental state. Conversely, our predominant negative emotions and thoughts can adversely affect the flow of qi.

why is acupuncture worth consideringWhen you ask what is acupuncture, consider the method used to restore qi.  The term itself means "needle piercing".  To restore the flow of qi, the acupuncturist, or professional trained in this medicine treatment, will insert very thin needles into your skin.  They do this at specific anatomic points on the body.  These are called  acupuncture points or acupoints and deliver a specific treatment effect to some area of the body, mind or emotions.

Acupuncture Methods

In addition to inserting needles into these specific points, in many forms of acupuncture, the needles are combined with other methods including moxibustion, laser, small impulses of electromagnetic energy, friction or even suction.  Pressure acupuncture is also a common type.  They do this in order to stimulate points to cause a specific reaction.  In other words, by stimulating the acupuncture points, the body’s balance in the movement of the qi is restored to good flow, therefore improving your health in the process.

While a half century ago people would ask, what is acupuncture, and be met with an answer about distance medicine, in today’s world it has become a common and regularly used method of treating illness.  You should not stop taking medications assigned to you by your doctor, but you can and should use acupuncture as a method of healing that works alongside these other methods.  Acupuncture is widely encouraged and highly respected around the world.  Consider what it can add to your healing and well being.

IVF Acupuncture Treatment

There are now a staggering 1 in 10 couples who have problems in conceiving. As a result of the research that has been carried out confirming the success of acupuncture to help in conception and ivf treatment, I have now treated quite a number of patients requesting help with this. I am happy to confirm that from my experience, acupuncture has helped several clients to at last become pregnant. The joy on their face is indeed a reward!

It may seem like fertility treatment is a by-product of our modern, technologically advanced world. The very frontiers of high-tech science are pushed by the challenges of fertility treatment: hormones injections and IVF. And as wonderful as the advances are in helping couples to achieve their dream, the success rate is far from perfect, leaving many turning back to much older technology - the ancient Chinese art of Acupuncture.

acupuncture and ivfAcupuncture is gaining acceptance as a complementary therapy to other fertility treatments, where it has proven to be especially beneficial. Studies have shown that acupuncture definitely increases the rate of pregnancy in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF).

A well-known German study done in 2002 followed 160 women who underwent IVF, 80 of them received acupuncture as well and 34 of those women got pregnant: a success rate of 42.5%. Of the other 80 women, those who received IVF without any acupuncture treatments, only 21 women (26.3%) became pregnant.

Another study, American, of 114 women showed that 51% of the women who had acupuncture and IVF treatments became pregnant compared to 36% of women who had IVF alone. Further analysis of the data revealed a much lower rate of miscarriage for the women who had acupuncture as well as IVF.

No one can agree on how or why this therapy works. The traditional Chinese practitioner’s explanation involves concepts such as ‘Qi’, imbalance and a restoration of harmony to the body, but according to Western medicine, the explanation is more likely to lie in brain chemistry.

However, a slightly more Western way of looking at the effects points less to the mystical Qi and more towards the solid science of brain chemistry. It has been noted that acupuncture increases production of endorphins, the body’s natural "feel good" brain chemical that also plays a role in regulating the menstrual cycle, egg production and possibly ovulation.

It has also been found that acupuncture treatment for infertility increases blood supply and flow to the reproductive organs, leading to speculation about increased egg follicles and elevated hormone levels around the ovaries.

It is also possible that acupuncture could help when the lining of the uterus is too weak to maintain a pregnancy - a problem associated with miscarriage. Increased blood flow may lead to a stronger lining in the uterus better able to sustain an implanted embryo.

Unfortunately, acupuncture will not help everyone. Good candidates have functional rather than structural reasons for infertility. Where there is a structural problem - such as a blocked fallopian tube or a fibroid tumour - acupuncture is not likely to help. And, past a certain age, acupuncture has little chance of being effective.

If you are looking at acupuncture as a first or complementary treatment, make sure you find a respected practitioner, preferably one known to and in contact with your fertility doctor. Be aware that treatments can vary dramatically in length and method, as can the costs. And be sure to check that you are covered for acupuncture by examining your insurance policy carefully.

What Is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

What is cosmetic acupuncture? Also known as facial rejuvenation, cosmetic acupuncture has become a popular and cost effective alternative to other more invasive and potentially disfiguring treatments. An additional bonus is that as a traditional acupuncturist, an holistic approach is used, where your general state of health is taken into consideration and addressed as well.

Cosmetic Acupuncture - A Beauty Secret

Given the notoriety of the dangers associated with cosmetic surgery, it is not surprising that ladies are seeking alternatives. Cosmetic surgery involves anesthesia, lasts for many hours, and leaves one with swelling, bruising, and redness. Recovery time is at least a couple of weeks.

pictures of acupuncture facial rejuvenationCosmetic acupuncture, on the other hand, is completely safe and has no risks or side effects aside from the possibility of slight bruising. Don’t expect an actual "facelift"; the benefits of facial cosmetic acupuncture are not magical and will not be noticed overnight. Rather than cutting the skin or using harsh chemical peels, cosmetic acupuncture provides more subtle results that are noticed over time.

The person doing the procedure will put small needles into the skin near each wrinkle or frown line. These needles encourage energy in the facial tissue, sending blood to the surface, and relaxing the muscles. Then each muscle tightens, decreasing the sag of the skin on the face. The insertion of the needles also encourages each cell to build collagen fibers to lift wrinkles and eliminate fine lines. The International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture recently published evidence that 9 out of 10 people who underwent acupuncture to the face experienced softer facial lines, better skin tone, smaller circles under their eyes and an overall facial rejuvenation.

Practitioners charge different fees and differ in the number of treatments they plan to administer. You should be careful, therefore, to choose a licensed practitioner for your cosmetic acupuncture needs. Licensed practitioners have been trained by qualified teachers.

Also, another benefit exclusive to acupuncture: while patients are seeking treatment for cosmetic concerns, acupuncture has a positive effect on the person as a whole. Traditional Chinese medicine has been used for stress, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and a whole list of other modern complaints. Although many are skeptical about the effectiveness of facial acupuncture, it is not hard to imagine that when one’s general well-being improves, the appearance of one’s skin will improve also.

Opponents of the procedure will remind you that it is only a short term solution, lasting no more than a handful of years. However, surgical facelifts also have a limited period of effectiveness. There is no solution that will last forever. In less than a decade, the ravages of time will begin to show again, regardless of the number of surgeries completed.

Author: Robert Harrison

Similar to the traditional Chinese medicine called body acupuncture, a practitioner of cosmetic acupuncture places very small needles into age lines on the face. The purpose of the needles is to get energy flowing in these areas. As blood rushes to the surface, the muscles tighten which firms the skin. The growth of new collagen cells is also encouraged by the needs, and collagen decreases the lines in the face as well. The International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reports that 90% of trial participants of facial acupuncture noted results like softening of facial lines, better skin tone, lessened blue circles under the eyes, and an overall facial rejuvenation effect

The Metal Element Personality

METAL ELEMENT - Phase 4 Autumn

Metal symbolThe Metal Element is like a Quality Controller taking the value of the fruit or karmic return of the thought seeds planted, in the creative process of the earlier phases. What has been the value of the experience? Here the essential seeds of it are extracted to be stored away as resources to draw upon in the future.  Are they high quality seeds that will produce beautiful and healthy thoughts and ideas in another cycle, or are they diseased?

This is the phase of increasing yin, when I take in the essence of my outer experiences, and in a healthy state, let go of that which is no longer of value to me. It is the time to receive what is valuable to me in the present, while letting go of the past, in order to allow newness in the future to enter. It is like the rhythm of breathing - taking in and letting go. Did plans and decisions of phase1 produce the kind of quality harvest that I wanted? Was the intent to unselfishly bring benefit to others, and myself or was I germinating seeds of selfishness and greed?  I cannot change it now. I have to experience the consequences whether it is of happiness or sorrow. The colour of the Metal Element is white which is  a symbol of purity.

In nature this Element comes in the form of metal ores, precious stones, crystals and minerals within the earth, giving it both richness and structural strength. Many of these have great beauty and are considered valuable. What we set out to do earlier is now reaping its reward, and we can appreciate the value of the experience.

Balanced state
There is respect for virtue in the self and others. There is purity and clarity in thoughts, words and actions. They have integrity - what is in their heart is expressed in their speech. They have an easy nature in attitude and vision. They have the ability to discriminate and judge accurately. There is value for the self and others. There is a rhythm of taking in and letting go of what has passed - absorbing and eliminating.  They do not keep for themselves anything that is unnecessarily.  They have the capability to crystallise everything into its essence.  There is a liking for discipline, method, analysis precision and structure. They have good organisational skills.

Key diagnostic signs of imbalanced state
Colour in face - white
Sound - weeping
Emotion - grief
Odour – rotten
Lungs and large intestine meridians organs

Over-active
There may be greed, envy and jealousy, stoicism and defensive pride.

Under-active
There may be feelings of grief, self-pity, dejection and despondency, hypersensitivity and oppression. With the Metal Element out of balance, there may be the experience of loss of quality in their life, an emptiness they may try to fill by acquiring possessions of value or in quantity to fill a need for self-esteem and respect from others.

They may be spiritual searchers. They want to be valued. They may become self-righteous, strict and autocratic, formal withdrawn and distant. They can experience excessive grief, sorrow and anguish coming from a sense of loss. They may be perfectionists and either obsessively clean or not caring about themselves or their environment depending on their level of self-respect.

There may be problems connected with the lungs (asthma, shallow breathing, etc.) and bowel problems including constipation coming from a difficulty in being able to ‘ let go’. This Element is also connected with our defence system against invading pathogens. There may be skin problems, as the skin is our barrier against infections and also the interface between us and the rest of the world.

The Earth Element Personality

EARTH ELEMENT - Phase 3 Late Summer

Earth symbolThis is the element of balance and transformation between the exuberant expression of the yang creative process and the quieter yin energy of receptivity and nurturing. There is transformation from an upward and outward direction to a downward and inward one. Creativity has now reached a stage of maturity (mater = mother) bearing the fruits of the purpose initiated earlier by the Wood Element. There is success, and the experience of both satisfaction and happiness as a result. This is Mother Earth full and bountiful, able to serve and nurture tirelessly because she has so much to give. She is like a trustee of the public granaries.

It is the balance point between giving and receiving, where you can see from where you have come and where you are going. We come to know the fruits of our actions. The Earth Element symbolises a sense of well - being, stability and security through abundance. The earth is also the foundation of all the other elements, and the medium through which seeds are provided with nutrition and support of them to transform into mature, fruit-bearing plants. The colour of this element is yellow like ripened corn.

Balanced state
There is empathy and mercy for the needs of others. They are involved and at the same time detached. They live within their own parameters. Through their innate power of concentration, they are able to nurture the seeds of positive thoughts until they bear fruit and then let go. This harvest brings fulfilment, happiness and contentment. They have the ability to facilitate communication between their inner and outer worlds. They are grounded, open and receptive. They remain stable amidst change.

Key diagnostic signs of imbalanced state
Colour in face - yellow
Sound - singing
Emotion - sympathy
Odour - fragrant
Stomach and spleen / pancreas meridians/organs

Over-active
There may be an over-protective mothering, clinginess, pity and over-concern for others (trying to put right everyone’s problems). There can be over-thinking, worry, brooding and obsessive thoughts (mental indigestion). They can lose their self-identity through over identifying with the needs of others.

Under-active
There may be difficulty in giving and receiving, indifference, forgetfulness and lack of concentration. They seek a lot of sympathy from others and feel they are martyrs (“poor me”).

With an Earth imbalance, there are often problems around nourishment and digestion on all levels, sugar craving, weight problems and low energy. When the Earth is in a balanced state it is stable and secure, but when out of balance, there may be problems with, feeling ungrounded uncentred, disconnected and insecure.

The Fire Element Personality

FIRE ELEMENT - Phase 2 Summer

Fire symbolFire is an expression of full yang energy that seeks to move in an upward direction and is concerned with the capacity to grow and manifest its highest potential. Once the purpose has been initiated through the dynamic vitality of the Wood Element, the quality of the energy changes to that of love and care for the development of the fresh new purpose. Fire is the sun giving light and warmth, essential for the growth and photosynthesis of plants. They reach for the light, as without it, they would fade and die.

In a balanced state, fire burns brightly, but never out of control nor choked by ashes due to neglect. In the presence of this energy, plants open and blossom, filling the air with perfume. They are being fully themselves. In the same way, love of the right kind is essential for the human spirit to thrive. Given unconditional love, it flourishes and expresses with joy, its purest qualities. This is the Element of full yang - the glory of the creative process. Its colour is red, it is bright, warm and alive.

Balanced state
This is the seat of the Conscience, therefore always in spiritual self-awareness, stable, centred and powerful. They live constantly on the basis of knowing all natural and spiritual laws (the Tao). They know Truth. They always listen to their inner wisdom, which brings clarity. There is pure joy, unconditional love and acceptance, understanding. They are open, neutral and just. There is self-respect and respect for all others.

Key diagnostic signs of imbalanced state
Colour in face - red or lack of red (like ash)
Sound - laughing
Emotion - inappropriate joy or a lack of joy
Odour - scorched
Heart and Small Intestines, Heart Protector and Triple Heater meridians / organs

Over-active
There may be nervous excitement, restless gaiety, giggling, frenzied anxiety, over-elation or hysteria. There may be inappropriate laughing, and rapid speech, emotional insecurity and absent-mindedness, nervous exhaustion, insomnia or palpitations.

Under-active
There is sadness (the sad clown), easy discouragement, self-doubt, self-despair, lack of
self-confidence, depression, hopelessness or emptiness.

With the Fire out of balance, there are often circulatory and temperature control problems. There may be difficulties involving relationships, giving and receiving love and fear of being rejected or emotionally hurt.

The Wood Element Personality

WOOD ELEMENT - Phase 1 Spring

Wood symbolWood symbolises the process of the potential hidden within the seed seeking to manifest itself in the light of day. It stands for what is living and moving in the direction of fulfilling its purpose of self-actualisation. It has the dynamic energy of youth and of rising yang, being able to initiate new beginnings, the capacity to clearly see what must be done and the method to be used to achieve this. Just as a living tree is as deeply rooted in the ground as it is tall, giving it strength and stability, so this element manifests the strengths of leadership, determination and energetic pursuit of its chosen purpose. It is like a military strategist, planning a campaign to glorify his ruler.

Nevertheless, just as a tree will bend in the wind and grow around obstacles, rather than forcing its way through, so there is the quality of flexibility, tolerance and humility in the harmonious functioning of this element. A tree will accept the habitat in which it finds itself and will adapt accordingly, so that it can continue to serve its purpose. A young shoot is delicate but also has amazing vigour and quiet persistence, that it can even push its way through tarmac or concrete, in order to manifest itself.

Each tree is following its own growth pattern, while at the same time, in a forest of trees, it is involved in the collective service that all the other trees are fulfilling. The tree stands both alone and together. In the same way, we are fulfilling our own purpose but also we are a part of a greater whole. With the capacities of judgement, discrimination, planning and decision-making, we are able to move successfully in the right direction towards the fulfilment of our aims. The quality of young wood is gentle, peaceful, flexible and yet purposeful. The colour of this element is like the fresh green of new foliage.

Balanced state

Resilient, rational, independent, strong self-identity and self-belief, well-motivated, confident, with clarity of vision and direction. They are good leaders and initiators of new projects. They have good planning and decision-making abilities.

Key diagnostic signs of imbalanced state
Colour in face - green
Sound - shouting
Emotion - anger
Odour - rancid
Liver and Gall Bladder meridians / organs

Over-active
There may be arrogance, irritability and intolerance, competition, resentment, frustration, anger, over-controlling. The person may be workaholic, or tyrannical. Explosive expression or a bottling-up of emotions. Over-active planning intellect, mood swings, or burn-out.

Under-active
There may be lack of motivation and making excuses, lack of confidence, difficulty in planning or decision-making, self-blame, guilt or depression.

Where this Element is out of balance, there may be problems with over-stretched or flaccid tendons and ligaments causing many back problems and sciatica - type pains. As we need vision to plan ahead for the future, it is the eyes that are particularly associated with the Wood Element.

And Quiz Time Folks! Want to Discover Which Element You Are?

Fill in the questions further down this page and find out!

I have never really comprehended why the term "five elements theory" is still used. As you will see below, we have a beautiful and very real relationship with the Five Elements when we know how to live in harmony with them, but we do pay a price if we don’t.  Certainly no mere theory - I see it working everyday with patients!

My Relationship With The Five Elements

The signs and symptoms are many and varied because we don’t just experience disharmony through the functioning of one Element at a time. If one Element is stressed on any level, spiritually, mentally, emotionally or physically, it will also affect the others, as the part affects the whole. How much other Elements are affected depends on the degree and nature of the imbalance and the period of time it has been present.

The seed of harmony and health lies in the knowledge and belief in the authentic self as a spiritual being who is innately peaceful, loving, benevolent, happy and wise. The seed of all states of imbalance and disease are caused by identifying with the body, its roles and relationships rather than with the spiritual beings that we are.

In diagnosis, there are key indicators that will point to the root Element that has become our main weakness, but which emerged out of our speciality. (A vice is just a virtue we have distorted through false identity.) These indicators are the predominant, but subtle colour in the face, the sound of the voice, inappropriate emotion and odour. Other means of diagnosing, such as asking the patient about their symptoms, palpation, feeling the pulse etc. are secondary and misleading.

If you would like to have fun and discover which Element type you may be, then fill in the questionnaire Which Five Elements Type am I? and the Scorecard below. Read through the descriptions of the Five Elements and see which one fits you the best. In reality we are all the Elements and so you may find you can identify with more than one.

Here is the the questionnaire. It is best to print it off so it is easy to input your scores with a pen.

What Are The Five Elements Of Life?

An understanding of what are the Five Elements of life lies at the roots of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.

People of ancient times were attuned to the changing cycles of the seasons and understood the rhythms of life, their underlying natural laws and they survived by living in accordance with them. Originally, an agricultural society the Chinese observed and learned from these cycles.

“…just as Nature all around them is going through its natural process of change, they instinctively know that the Nature inside them follows these same patterns, that intuitively human beings go through the cycle of the seasons within themselves, that the Elements are recreated within them. Each Element is ever present and ever basic to life:

It is not just in the world around them that the tender shoots of spring are born bursting into life: it is also within themselves. It is not only in summer that things bloom and flourish, but also within them, and so on with all the seasons. “ Traditional Acupuncture: the Law of the Five Elements” by Dianne M. Connelly

Life is like a hologram where one part is a microcosm of the whole. That which applies to the level of spirit, also applies to the level of matter as the Law of the Five Elements manifests universally.

A return to health and well - being is based upon understanding and re-aligning ourselves with the natural and spiritual laws.

We live in and are ourselves made up of ever - changing energy patterns. The Chinese name for this Life Force energy is chi that flows in and around us like electricity. What differentiates one expression of it from another is its frequency and speed of vibration. As we think, speak and act, we are affecting the flow of this Life Force.

This Life Force, chi has a duality often known as yin and yang. Yang is creative expressive, outward and upward moving energy, whereas yin is nurturing, receptive, yielding, inward and downward moving energy. Yin and yang are never static, but they are ever moving and changing. They form a unity of opposite and complementary qualities and contain the seed of each other. Nothing is totally yin or totally yang. They underlie all phenomena and as a consequence the only certainty in life is change.

The Law of the Five Elements emerges from the cyclic movement of yin and yang. The Chinese word for Element is xing, which means to ‘step forward with one foot and then the other’. This is often translated as ‘phase’ or ‘movement’ so the Five Elements are different phases of Chi as it moves from yin to yang, yang to yin.

The best example to illustrate this is the cycle of the seasons.

WOOD

Phase 1 Spring – increasing yang
After the dormancy of winter, in the spring there is the germination of seeds. new shoots begin to gently but powerfully push their way through the soil. The sap rises in the trunks of trees sending energy and sustenance to all the branches so that fresh leaves can emerge. Plants put down roots to draw nutrition from the earth, while new shoots reach upwards towards the light of the sun, which gradually increases in strength.  We can feel the vibrancy and vitality of this energy.

At every moment we are having thoughts, which are like seeds that we can choose to plant or put into action. Maybe, we begin planning some decorating, choosing a holiday, and preparing the garden for new planting. It is a good time to initiate any new task, to look ahead at what needs to be done in the forthcoming year, plan and make decisions of any kind.  There is a feeling of new strength and dynamism about the energy of spring.  The yang energy is beginning to increase. It is a very energetic time.

FIRE

Phase 2 Summer - maximum yang
In summer, after the initial germination of seeds in Springtime, growth is well under way. The days are longer and there is more sunlight. The root systems of plants are firmly established and plants are rapidly gaining in strength as they reach upwards and spread outwards to absorb the maximum amount of the sun’s energy. Everything is alive and flourishing. This is the period of full yang. Nature is serving the planet. Each plant and tree is fulfilling its purpose. Leaves are fully open as each tree performs its vital service to the planet of breathing in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen to maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

In the same way, we too have a creative purpose to fulfil, and are here to express our highest potential. We each have something valuable and unique to share with the rest of the world. Maybe, it is a new idea, a skill a talent or perhaps a special quality like compassion, courage or determination. We are naturally creative beings.  Firstly, we need to give, and then automatically we will experience the return as the cycle of karma spins.

EARTH

Phase 3 Late Summer - balance
This is a special time of the year, which in the West we do not designate as a specific season. In the East, it is given significance, as it is an important point of balance. This is the time when the yang energy of summer has already reached its maximum and it is on the point of beginning to decrease, and the receiving energy of yin is about to develop. Both yang and yin are balanced here for a short time.

There is the culmination of all the power of growth, the formation of fruits containing new seeds on the trees, the fulfilment of Nature’s purpose as the Great Provider. There is abundance and satisfaction at this time of year. In the same way, if we are giving of ourselves in order to bring benefit to all our relationships, then we also begin to experience the fruit of that in the form of contentment and happiness. Fulfilment leads naturally to wanting to share the fruits of our efforts with others, to understanding and meeting their needs.

METAL

Phase 4 Autumn - increasing yin
the creative yang energy at work in the growing seasons, is now diminishing and the receptive qualities of yin energies are ascending. This is the season of reaping what has been sown. Fruits that fall to the ground release their precious treasure of seeds, so that these too can continue the task of serving the ecosystem next spring. This is the time of completion.

Leaves that are old and now of no use, are discarded and what is of value in the form of new life in the seeds is retained and protected in the earth. Nothing is truly wasted for even the rotting leaves provide nutrition for future rebirth. We too, can have the satisfaction that what we had set out to do earlier is now reaping its reward, and we can appreciate the value of the experience.

WATER

Phase 5 Winter - maximum yin
This is the period of rest, a time when energies are restored, a period of stillness and introspection. The receptive yin energy is at its fullest, and quietly underground, Nature is building up its reserves and empowering herself. Above ground, everything appears cold and lifeless because the creative yang energy is dormant. The trees are bare.

We too, need to experience quiet, reflective times when we can take stock and just “be”. This is a most valuable and necessary period. In today’s fast-moving world we do not give enough value to introspection, to the yin phase of the cycle of karma, for from this power of silence will emerge the birth of new ideas arising out of the treasure store of our experiences.

These five phases or Elements also flow within our body, mind and spirit.

The Fascinating History Of Acupuncture

The history of acupuncture is one of the most amazing stories you will hear.  This is an ancient form of medicine that came close to being non-used.  Yet, in the last two decades has seen a vast calling for it.

As people lose faith in traditional or western medicine, they seek out alternative health treatments to help them to manage pain, overcome illness or to improve their quality of life.  All of these things can help individuals to heal through natural methods.

diagram of pressure points in acupuncture

Acupuncture dates back thousands of years and it is believed to be a type of medicine that was practised even before records indicate it.  In fact, some believe that the history of acupuncture dates back to the Taoist traditions where could date back 8000 years.  During that time period, people would meditate.  In doing so, they realized that there was a flow of energy in their bodies that moved within and without.  During this ancient time, people observed nature and the first theories of yin-yang were developed.  Later,  the Book of Change or I-Ching was created which would be used for many thousands years as an outline of the trigrams.

The acupuncture’s history can also be traced based on the evidence of needles found today.  In some ruins found within China, needles can be found that date back to the New Stone Age.  The New Stone Age was from 10,000 to 4000 years ago.  During that time, people had developed the skills to refine stones into very thin needles.  These were then used, it is believed as parts of the healing process.  They were given a name of bian stone.  This name represents a sharp tool that is used to treat disease.

During the growth of acupuncture, there were several important advancements.  For example, one of the most significant was the period of the Huang Di which was from 2697 to 2597.  During that time, Huang Di and his physician Qi Bo worked to discuss and develop many of the traditional Chinese arts including acupuncture.  The text, The Nei Jing (The Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine) was developed which would serve as an important treatise in acupuncture outlining techniques, acupuncture points, needles and even descriptions of the meridians.

The history of acupuncture continues with the refinement of these processes as well as the creation of new methods of acupuncture.  Today, there are many ways that they can be used, but all are based on these ancient methods.

What Does Acupuncture Involve?

So, what does acupuncture involve? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions that patients prior to having acupuncture treatment. Since first being introduced in the West in the early 1970’s, the demand for it has steadily grown, until it is now one of the mainstream complementary therapies practised in the United Kingdom.

Q: What is it?
A: Practised for thousands of years, it is one of the oldest methods of healing. It is believed to have originated in China and the fact that it is still widely used today gives some indication of its great value in treating many conditions.

It is soundly based on the laws and principles that underlie the creation of all natural phenomenon. In the practice of traditional Five Elements acupuncture these laws are closely observed and treatment is based upon working with them.

acupuncture to stop smokingThere is a vital life force (Qi energy) that flows through subtle channels forming a network throughout the body. When this energy is free flowing and balanced then health and wellbeing are experienced. In any disease condition this energy has become disturbed and both its strength and quality are impaired. ‘Dis-ease’ occurs when the ease with which this energy would normally flow is affected. Our emotions and feelings, adverse climatic conditions and trauma all have a powerful impact on the Qi, especially if they are extreme or prolonged.

The use of fine needles (usually stainless steel) gently inserted into specific points along the affected channels or meridians affects the Qi and begins to re-balance it. Blockages in the flow can be detected and released, stagnation or excess energy dispersed and energy improved where there is deficiency. As harmony and balance are once again restored, symptoms of illness disappear. Together with needles, a herb called moxa ( artemesia vulgaris latiflora) may also be used in the form of very small cones placed on the acupuncture point or wrapped around the needle, ignited and removed when heat is felt. This invigorates the Qi and is especially useful when symptoms arise due to cold.

Q: What can it treat?
A:  Five Elements acupuncture views a person holistically as body and spirit. The body reflects the state of the spirit and likewise what is happening to the body can affect the spirit. If there is anger, anxiety, fears, depression, grief, panic, sadness or worry these can create imbalance in the Qi and affect the functioning of the body. Poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma can also affect the energy.

Many conditions can be treated including anxiety states, arthritis, asthma, back pain, circulatory problems, depression, facial paralysis, fibrositis, high blood pressure, infertility, menstrual problems, migraines, rheumatism, sciatica, skin conditions or ulcers. Treatment is aimed towards restoring harmony once again. As all aspects are part of the whole person, imbalance can manifest on any or all levels – mentally, emotionally and physically.

Q:  Who has it?
A:  There is no age limit for having treatment. Even very young children can have it. For them, moxa alone may be all that is required and a minimum of needles. If a patient is sceptical this will not affect the benefits of treatment.

Q. What does it feel like?
A:  The needles are very fine like a hair and solid, unlike the ones normally used in blood tests. When the needles are inserted the sensation felt can be slightly tingling, a dull ache or hardly anything is felt. The needles may be inserted for a second or two, or left in for up to 20 minutes depending upon the desired effect. Often there is the experience of relaxation or having more energy after treatment.

Q:  What will my first visit be like?
A:  This would take up to two hours and entail a detailed medical and personal history and a physical examination to assess your general state of health and ascertain the underlying patterns of disharmony. The Chinese pulses are taken, usually in the wrist from which the condition of the energy in the twelve main meridians can be determined. Other diagnostic tools of Chinese medicine are to analyse the predominant facial colour, sound of the voice, emotion and odour. By these methods the condition of the Qi can be revealed as well as the underlying cause of the condition.

There are about 500 recognised acupuncture points. Needles may be inserted in different part of the body to where the problem is experienced. For instance points on the feet and hands may be used to treat headaches. The acupuncturist needs to know of any medication you may be taking and it can be helpful to let your doctor know you are having acupuncture. Treatment may enable you to stop or reduce medication and this would need to be done in consultation with your doctor.

Q:  How frequent is treatment?
A:  This varies from person to person and the needs of the individual. Some change should usually be felt after five treatments and often much sooner. Treatment is usually recommended once or twice a week or even less depending on the condition. Effects of treatment can be sometimes dramatic and only one or two are needed. In other cases the effects may be more subtle and felt over a period of months.

Q:  How Safe is it?
A:  Make sure that you have treatment from an acupuncturist belonging to a recognised professional body that observe a Code of Practice that lays down stringent standards for equipment, sterilisation and hygiene. Many acupuncturists now use disposable needles.
Please ensure that your practitioner is professionally qualified.

Which Energetic Tools For Self Healing?

Meditation is one of the best energetic tools for self healing, as it allows us access to the  inner beauty that lies in the depths of all of us, that is the source of the most potent healing energy. It is the experience of these inner qualities of peace, love, happiness, purity and truth that begins to heal us at a profound level and as it does so it works from the centre to the outside.

It is the conscious practice of incorporating these qualities into my life through the thoughts I habitually think, the words I speak and the things I do, that creates a balance once again.

From experience in the use of traditional acupuncture, it can be seen that there is a direct connection between, for instance the emotion of anger and disturbances in the pathways of energy of the liver and gall bladder meridians.

These in turn have an affect on our ability to plan and to make wise decisions and judgements. If there is anger these abilities are impaired and wrong or snap decisions are made on impulse rather than reasoning. Anger can give rise to symptoms such as high blood pressure, stroke or severe migraines.

The liver and gall bladder meridians have a powerful connection with ligaments and tendons and so there may be signs such as varying severity of muscle pain and spasm, back problems or inflammation of muscle and tissue. Remember the tight hunched shoulders we experience when we get wound up?

The core quality that is the antidote to anger is peace.  In order to ‘see’ and plan, make good decisions and carry them out we need inner peace – no turmoil. When we are peaceful, we are easy on ourselves, more tolerant and light. Everything can flow smoothly and easily including our emotions, blood circulation and digestion.

It is interesting, and helpful to know which core qualities are antidotes to our negative emotional states because they will begin to heal us in a very profound and noticeable way. They are the source of our healing energy.

How can we access them and direct their flow?

The key to this is the power of our own thoughts and the method of access is meditation. This word ‘meditation’ has the same root as ‘medication’ and means to heal the self from inside. It is in moments of stillness that we can do this most effectively.

The power of our thoughts can never be under-estimated. It is awesome! Thoughts are like seeds that we plant in the fertile soil of our minds. If well tended, they will take root and grow. For this reason we need to be careful what kind of thoughts we nurture in the nursery of our minds! If they are positive, peaceful and harmonious, then the magic of the mind begins to produce harmonious situations and everything seems to happen as if a fairy has waved a magic wand.

If my thoughts are habitually negative, complaining or angry then it is as if there is some mischievous devil at work. Nothing seems to go right; there is one catastrophe after another and problems arise. I can never really relax as I am wondering what else is going to go wrong.

Think and it shall be so! It is our inner world of thoughts and feelings that create our outer world. Most people stay focussed on what is happening in the outside world, but the wise will look inwards and create an inner world of harmony based on our core qualities and their outer life will reflect this.

I am sure you have met people who always seem ‘lucky’ without having to put in a lot of effort. Lady Luck is on their side and everything always turns out well for them. And yet, there are others who seem to be blighted by bad luck. The answer lies in their thought patterns and processes. We can transform our lives by understanding the Law at work here. The Law is that my thoughts are the cause and outer conditions are the effect. As you sow, so you will reap.

Instead of trying to work to change the effect, if we change our minds and reprogram our subconscious then we can transform our lives. This is the magic of thought. By this means we can change poverty into abundance, illness into health, fear into confidence.

If I believe myself to be an ill person, I am powerfully programming my subconscious to create this state. If I go to sleep at night with thoughts of being healthy and strong my subconscious will believe me and start to bring it about. If I go to sleep feeling miserable, I will wake up feeling…. you guessed it – miserable. Take charge of your thoughts. You are their master.

Meditation is the key to self-transformation. Through the right kind of meditation we come to experience the healing power of our pure qualities and feel them bringing lightness and balance to both our bodies and our lives.

How do we stay healthy?

“You remain healthy by maintaining a diet of pure feelings, good wishes and positive thoughts.” Bapdada.

An Holistic Approach To Health

Our Identity Crisis

At the centre of my spirit there is a pure and powerful core of unimaginable beauty filled with innate goodness, natural peace, happiness, love and truth. We catch glimpses of them but they are elusive.

Although I long to be happy, healthy and prosperous I have forgotten how to access the treasure store that is within me, where all of these lie waiting discovery. No, we look outside and seem to be on an eternal quest to find happiness through outer relationships and distractions. It is when I forget who I am as a spiritual being and think myself to be physical, that the patterns of disease begin to take shape.

I become engrossed in the roles I play and try to seek fulfilment through them, but it is only temporary. Who am I? This reminds me of a letter once sent to me which began -

“Mrs. Helen Wall – Chairman, Chief Executive, Managing Director, Finance Director, I.T. Manager, Marketing Director, Transport Manager, Project Manager, Company Secretary, Advertising Manager, Personal Assistant, Receptionist, Tea Lady, and Office Cleaner!”

Which role am I, or none of them? Who is the real me behind these roles? If we just check through an average day in our own lives, we see that we wear many hats and play many roles.

Activity and doing more and more obsess us, but is it bringing us happiness? We are too action orientated. We fill our lives with ceaseless activity, always on the ‘go’. Some of us find it hard to relax because we are so wound up for action. If we sit down, we feel guilty and look around or think about all the outstanding jobs that always seem to be waiting in the wings. We are in perpetual motion. This is where our lives become very unbalanced.

Our most valuable moments can be when we are still. It is then that we are conserving and accumulating energy. We may even receive insights from our inner wisdom when the mind is quiet. It is at such times that we can connect with our most powerful resources of healing energy.
